Grant Philosophy

In a choice of grant-making styles that can range from passive to proactive, prescriptive to preemptory, the Collectors Foundation Board of Directors chooses to make its decisions in the proactive to prescriptive range in the awarding of grants.

That means the Collectors Foundation tends to use its influence to promote causes it deems especially important to the long-term interests of the collector vehicle and classic boat hobbies, and to sometimes initiate unsolicited proposals. The Board's belief in the importance of change, challenge, collaboration and sustainability informs its decisions and is the basis for its grant-making.

GRANT CONSIDERATIONS:
Collectors Foundation will consider funding programmatic and capital projects within one of these primary areas of interst: education, preservation, safety. The funding parameters are:

  • Special Opportunity grants - in the range of $500 to $1,000 to support clubs, museums, and libraries to take advantage of opportunities/needs outside their normal operating budget.

  • Major grants - in the range of $2,500 to $10,000 - to fund special initiatives/projects for clubs, museums, libraries, and educational institutions.

  • Multi-year grants - up to $100,000 usually in the form of a challenge grant to an organization or institution involved in historic preservation and/or education.

  • Educational scholarships - are awarded through accredited educational institutions to students studying and preparing for careers supportive of collector vehicle and classic boat presevation/restoration.

(This philosophy of grant-making section is inspired by the writings and guidance of Joel J. Orosz in his book The Insider's Guide to Grantmaking, and publication of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, and published in 2000 by Jossey-Bass.)
Does the proposal have a long-term view to help the hobby?
Does the proposal have the potential to create positive change in individuals and organizations?
Is the proposal innovative and worthy of trial, with the possibility of replication?
Is the proposal designed to further public interest and appreciation of the historic vehicle and classic boat hobbies?
Does the proposal address the issue of sustainability of the project/program beyond the life of the grant?
